Babies are starting to arrive here at Spirit Hill Farm in beautiful Cadiz, KY near Lake Barkley State Park. Our first arrived two weeks early on 4/23/08 and its a girl! We call Mama, Pooh so its only fitting we named her baby Winnie. She has nice straight legs and is tooth on tooth so conformation looks good so far. We are between La Grange and Schulenburg 7 miles north of I-10. We only have two Jenets 6 years old and both bred together for the first time to our young Jack. The first Donkey foaled yesterday but with the worst posible presentaion. Nothing but ribs. It was folded in half with the ribs leading. Our Vet could not get her re-positioned and she lost her first foal after a C-Section. The 2nd Domkey is very close to delivering her foal. We had such hopes of the two having their foals together. But more importantly these two jenets have been extremely close together since their birth two days apart. I'm worried how they will react towards each other and the 2nd baby that should arrive very soon. The only way I can think to ease the pain of our Dear Jenet is to find an orphaned Foal within 4 days and present it to the first Donkey as her own. Maybe rub the birthing fluids on it. He was gelded 2007. He has been in parades, around kids and is very gentle, having been used as a jack he will let you know when your jennets are in heat. Bred Jennet due in July. This Jennet is a 6 year old 32 1/2" registered gray dun. She is bred to a 29" registered choc. jack. This Jennet has had 2 foals for us and she has refused to take care of them, we have always held the mom for the first week so the baby could get colostrum and then end up bottle feeding the foal--the foals always ends up being more like a dog, following the kids and even climbing stairs to come into the house. We have enjoyed feeding the foals but this summer will not work for us, we would like to find a home for her and get her settled before July. It is a challenge and it will take time.
